Metal Free Crowns
Dental crowns fully encase the visible portion of a tooth that lies above the gum line and are used for a number of purposes including the protection of a weak tooth, the restoration of a broken tooth, to cover and support a tooth with a large filling or to cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth. Traditionally, these crowns were made out of all metal (silver or gold in color) or porcelain fused onto a metal substructure. Although these porcelain fused to metal crowns have esthetic advantages over the all metal type, they often become unsightly due to the appearance of gray or black lines at the gum line.
All-ceramic crowns have created a new standard in cosmetic dentistry. The advantage of all-ceramic crowns over traditional metal ceramic crowns is their ability to permit better light transmission through the body of the tooth, creating a completely natural appearance. The concern over seeing the black line at the gum area is also eliminated. All-ceramic crowns are the jewel of esthetic dentistry but are just one option available. Based on the location of a crown in the mouth and a patient’s intraoral forces, the doctors at Bryn Mawr Dental Associates will advise as to which crown type is best for both functional and cosmetic needs.
